Portraits of Youth Activists in the Western Balkans

The story behind SIX STEPS UP

With her keen eye and empathetic look, photographer and film producer Janine Baumeister traveled the Western Balkans Six along with her team to meet twelve exceptional youth activists.

In powerful and personal interviews the young protagonists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia share their inspiring journeys to finding the courage to take action on some of the most pressing issues of our time.

SIX STEPS UP provides their tangible approaches on how to protect democracy, fight against climate change, promote social equality and foster unity in the beautiful diversity of the Western Balkans and across Europe.

The launch of this traveling exhibition in October 2024 will take place as part of the 10th anniversary of the Berlin Process. It aims to travel throughout Europe to inspire young people to raise their voices and to claim their seats at the decision-making tables – because “if we don’t do it, nobody will do it for us!”

SIX STEPS UP is part of a project from Bürger Europas e.V.,

supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.

The views expressed in these interviews represent those of the individuals

and do not reflect the official position of the organizations supporting the project.

"I know it's a cliché, but

if we don't do it, no one

will do it for us. This country and  this society have been damaged enough,

it’s on us, the younger generation, to do

something about it."
